From an educational perspective, students in elementary and middle school are primarily learning foundational skills such as reading comprehension strategies, basic math computation and how it relates to broader concepts and applications, and the fundamentals of writing the English language. Most subject matter learned in these years also tends to be introductory in nature and is used as much as a vehicle for instruction as it is for creating a broad foundation that will be built upon during the high school years. It is therefore assumed that students in high school have the requisite skills necessary for comprehending complex text, constructing a written argument, or solving a complicated math problem as the case may be. There is a much greater emphasis placed on learning and retaining specific subject matter at the high school level, as well as critical analysis and interpretation. This is typically the focus of instruction for students who receive academic tutoring at Vertex.

Vertex does not aim to replace the role of a school teacher. Instead, we want to collaborate with educators and administrators in schools to help students achieve their goals.

Our academic tutors work with students to elucidate difficult concepts, instill confidence in challenging subject areas, and help students find enjoyment and interest in what may have previously been considered boring material. This is accomplished through the careful placement of a student with an appropriate instructor who will develop rapport with the student, be able to identify areas of challenge, and teach to a particular student’s learning style.
